Bruce Heyman, a former US ambassador to Canada appointed by Obama, warned at a national security conference that a mass deportation effort under Trump could lead many undocumented immigrants in the US to flee northward into Canada.
Heyman claimed this is plausible based on past migration patterns in response to economic downturns and Trump’s 2016 election.
He advised Canadian politicians to offer US residents work visas or the potential for Canadian citizenship in order to gain political influence in the US.
“These people aren’t just going to sit there and wait to be rounded up,” Heyman said.

“You’ve got a generational opportunity to get the top talent, people with means and skills, on your side [in political disputes] — and possibly into your country,” Heyman said.
One Canadian columnist acknowledged the liberal immigration policies under Prime Minister Trudeau have contributed to a housing crisis and declining wages by rapidly increasing demand while relying on imported foreign labor.
