The mayor of St. Paul, Minnesota proudly announced that his own student loan debt had been completely canceled.
He shared a screenshot showing his account balance at $0.
Mayor Melvin Carter thanked President Biden for the relief.
“Thank you, Mr. President!” Carter wrote.
Biden has taken executive action to cancel student debt for millions of Americans despite the Supreme Court blocking a broader plan.
“The Supreme Court tried to block me from relieving student debt. But they didn’t stop me. I’ve relieved student debt for over 5 million Americans. I’m going to keep going,” Biden wrote.
For those who have paid on their loans for 10 years and owe under $12,000, their debt is canceled entirely.
Larger balances will see gradual forgiveness tied to additional years of payments.
As a public official earning over $130,000, Carter qualified for and benefited from Biden’s targeted cancellation efforts, which the president has continued touting as a way to help people pursue opportunities in spite of legal challenges from opponents.
“Early in my term, I announced a major plan to provide millions of working families with debt relief for their college student debt,” Biden said. “Tens of millions of people in debt were literally about to be canceled in debts. But my MAGA Republican friends in the Congress, elected officials and special interests stepped in and sued us. And the Supreme Court blocked it. But that didn’t stop me.”
