Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene verbally attacked Anthony Fauci during a hearing of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Greene demanded Fauci face prosecution, refused to acknowledge him as a doctor, and accused him of concealing Covid-19 origin details and financing research implicated in the pandemic’s casualties.
Greene, known for controversial views, challenged Fauci’s credibility, implying criticism of Fauci reflects skepticism towards science and questioning Fauci’s alignment with the scientific community.
“It’s not a yes or no,” she said. “We’ll take that a ‘you-don’t-know-what-you-represent,’” she said.
Greene proceeded to display pictures of beagles that were used in experiments conducted by the National Institutes of Health.
“As a dog lover, I want to tell you this is disgusting and evil, what you signed off on, and these experiments that happened to beagles paid for by the American taxpayer,” she said. “And I want you to know that Americans don’t pay their taxes for animals to be tortured liked this.”
During the hearing, she consistently refused to recognize Fauci as “Dr Fauci” but instead as “Mr Fauci.”
“Mr Fauci — because you’re not ‘doctor’ — you’re Mr. Fauci,” she said while asking a question before saying, “No, I don’t need your answer.”
Following this, Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the leading Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, inquired with Chairman Brad Wenstrup about the possibility, according to the rules, for members to dispute the credentials of a medical professional.
“Yes, because in my time, that man does not deserve to have a license,” she said. “As a matter of fact, it should be revoked and he belongs in prison.”
Representative Kwesi Mfume of Maryland expressed regret over the deterioration or decline of a situation.
“Is this what we have become? Is this what we have devolved into,” he said. Greene alleged that Fauci fabricated the six-feet social distancing rule, while Fauci stated that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had formulated the guidance during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I didn’t say I made it up,” he said. “I said it is not based in science and it just appeared.” In reaction, Greene raised the picture of the dogs.
“What do dogs have to do with anything we’re talking about today,” he said. Ms. Greene remarked that the images illustrated the type of science they prioritized and depicted children in isolated groups during school hours amidst the Covid-19 crisis “because of evil science.”
“Your repulsive evil science,” she said. “You know what this committee should be doing? We should be recommending you to be prosecuted. We should be writing a criminal referral because you should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. You belong in prison, Dr Fauci.”
Following Greene’s line of questioning, Representative Robert Garcia, a Democrat from California, strongly criticized Greene’s statements.
“That was completely irresponsible,” he said. “This might be the most insane hearing I’ve actually attended.”
During the hearing, Garcia and other Democrats expressed regret to Fauci for the attacks from Republicans, highlighting the numerous death threats he, his wife, and daughters had received.
Raskin, earlier in the hearing, drew parallels between the attempts to discredit Fauci and the House Oversight Committee’s unsuccessful efforts to impeach President Joe Biden.
This hearing marked Fauci’s first public appearance on Capitol Hill since his departure as the chief medical adviser for the Biden administration and as the director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases.
Fauci has faced criticism since his time as the prominent figure in the Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus, often having to contradict former President Donald Trump’s recommendations on handling Covid-19.
