According to the New York City police, an alleged violent individual, identified as James Carlson, was arrested during the anti-Israel protest at Columbia University.
Reports suggest that Carlson, also known as Cody Carlson or Cody Tarlow, is linked to a wealthy advertising family. The New York Post revealed that Carlson, described as a “longtime anarchist” with no affiliation to Columbia University, was apprehended during a police operation at Hamilton Hall on Tuesday.
Authorities are investigating Carlson as a potential ringleader of the group responsible for the unauthorized occupation of the building. Carlson, aged 40, is reported to be one of the children of well-known advertising executives Richard “Dick” Tarlow and Sandy Carlson Tarlow.
Richard Tarlow passed away in 2022 at the age of 81, leaving behind an estate valued at a minimum of $20 million, as indicated in court documents. Tarlow gained recognition for his collaborations with cosmetic and fashion brands such as Revlon, Ralph Lauren, and Neutrogena, as highlighted in an obituary by AdAge.
Additionally, he was known for his steadfast support of John Jay College and the John Jay Justice Awards, as reported by Long Island publication Dan’s Papers.
James Carlson, the inheritor of the family wealth, is the owner of a 2,893-square-foot, three-story brownstone featuring four wood-burning fireplaces and a carriage house. Property records and online listings confirm that Carlson acquired this property in Park Slope in 2019 for $2.3 million.

Carlson faced legal consequences when he was apprehended and charged with criminal mischief, arson, and criminal possession of stolen property in connection with an incident on April 20.
The NYPD revealed that Carlson was involved in an assault where three individuals targeted a man holding an Israeli flag. One of the suspects seized the flag and fled into a crowd, while another suspect hurled a rock at the victim’s face as he attempted to pursue them, as detailed by the police.
Police reported that a third suspect seized the flag and set it ablaze during the incident. The victim incurred minor injuries but declined medical aid, and Carlson is accused of being involved in the assault.
Authorities are currently searching for the other two suspects involved in the altercation. In 2005, Carlson was arrested in connection to a violent protest known as the “West Coast Anti-Capitalist Mobilization and March Against the G8” in San Francisco.
During this protest, demonstrators harmed a police officer, causing a skull fracture, and vandalized multiple store windows, as per the New York Post.
Despite the allegations, Carlson and his legal representative have not yet responded to the request for comment from Fox News Digital.
