Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) stirred controversy by posting an image of an upside-down flag on social media, urging solidarity with Justice Samuel Alito and former President Donald Trump.
The photo, taken outside Alito’s residence on January 17, 2021, was revealed by The New York Times on May 16.
The flag, displayed inverted at his Virginia home in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol attack, drew criticism from Democrats who interpreted it as tacit approval of the Trump-related unrest.
Greene’s social media statement accused Democrats of swiftly leveraging the justice system upon assuming power to target the ex-president, urging individuals to symbolically protest by flying their flags upside-down.
“Now Democrats are going after Justice Alito for an upside-down flag being flown at his house,” Greene wrote. “WE SHOULD ALL BE FLYING THE FLAG UPSIDE DOWN!!!”
Samuel Alito has distanced himself from the flag controversy, stating that the upside-down flag was a reaction by his wife to anti-Trump signs in their neighbor’s yard, rather than a deliberate political statement.
The use of this symbol, linked to the “Stop the Steal” movement, has raised concerns, leading Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Durbin (D-IL) to request Alito’s recusal from cases related to the 2020 election.
This request is particularly significant as the Supreme Court is deliberating on Trump’s case regarding presidential immunity.
Marjorie Taylor Greene faced criticism from online users for her stance on the flag issue, which has garnered attention and sparked debate.
One Twitter user accused Marjorie Taylor Greene of acting like a Confederate soldier rather than a dedicated American public servant, suggesting that she seeks to dismantle the nation from within.
Another user dismissed her statements as dishonest, labeling her as “Bigfoot” and criticizing her for spreading falsehoods.
Expressing frustration, a different user condemned individuals engaging in what they viewed as rebellious behavior, using derogatory terms.
One tweet called for Greene’s arrest, denouncing her actions as unacceptable for a House member and urging Speaker Johnson to address her unfitness for office.
