Former President Trump hinted that he might be seen as a three-term president if he wins the upcoming election in November.
Addressing the National Rifle Association (NRA), Trump pondered whether he would serve two or three terms if he emerges victorious in the 2024 presidential race.
“You know, FDR 16 years, almost 16 years, he was four-term. I don’t know, are we going to be considered three term or two term?” he asked the crowd during the event Saturday.
“Are we three term or two term if we win?” he added.
As he continued speaking, a voice in the background could be heard shouting “three.”
Trump has previously stated that he would not seek a third term in the White House if he wins the election in November.
Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt served four terms before this amendment was put into effect, but he passed away early into his fourth term.
During an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press” last year, he made it clear that he would not pursue a third term if re-elected.
According to the 22nd Amendment, Presidents are limited to two terms in office.
In a recent interview with Time magazine, Trump reiterated his intention to retire after his second term and affirmed that he would not challenge the 22nd Amendment.
“I wouldn’t be in favor of a challenge. Not for me. I wouldn’t be in favor of it at all. I intend to serve four years and do a great job. And I want to bring our country back. I want to put it back on the right track,” he said.
“Our country is going down. We’re a failing nation right now. We’re a nation in turmoil,” he added.
