During a court appearance on Tuesday, a New York appeals court dealt a blow to former President Donald Trump by dismissing his appeal against a gag order issued by Judge Juan Merchan.

Gag order

The gag order is part of the proceedings for Trump’s hush money trial.

Hush money

Trump is currently facing charges brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for allegedly falsifying business documents to conceal a hush money payment reportedly made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign.

Alleged affair

The payment was purportedly aimed at silencing Daniels from publicly discussing her alleged affair with Trump.

Innocence

Trump maintains his innocence regarding the affair and all criminal allegations, having pleaded not guilty to the charges. He has accused Bragg of politically motivated targeting in the case.

Significant threat

“Justice Merchan properly determined that petitioner’s public statements posed a significant threat to the integrity of the testimony of witnesses and potential witnesses in this case as well,” the ruling reads.

Trump social media

There have been concerns raised about Trump’s social media activity potentially violating the order, leading Judge Merchan to warn of potential imprisonment if such actions persist.

Setbacks

After a series of setbacks over the past few weeks, Trump has been unable to overturn the gag order imposed on him as his trial progresses.

Prohibits

The gag order prohibits Trump from publicly discussing the case’s witnesses, the judge or district attorney’s staff and family, or potential jurors.

Statements

However, Trump is permitted to make statements regarding Bragg and Merchan.
