Former NBA point guard Darius Morris has died at age 33. Morris played for the Los Angeles Lakers and other teams between 2011-2015.
He starred in college for the University of Michigan.
His family announced his passing and requested privacy, though no cause of death was provided.
“With great sadness we announce the passing of our dearly beloved son, Darius Aaron Morris,” his family stated. “During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”
Morris’ body was found in the LA area.
The Lakers and Morris’ former Michigan coach John Beilein expressed sadness at his passing, with Beilein noting Morris’ leadership role for Michigan’s basketball program during a 21-win season that helped lay the foundation for future success.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of Darius Morris,” the Lakers wrote on X.
“Saddened to hear about the passing of former Wolverine Darius Morris. In 2010-11 Darius was our starting (point guard),” Beilein wrote on X. “He was a leader in that program changing 21 win season that laid the foundation for Michigan’s next decade of success.
Morris averaged 3.3 points per game over his 132-game NBA career before injuries derailed his professional career.
No further details were given about the circumstances of his death at a young age.
