Tony Bobulinski
Tony Bobulinski, a former business associate of Hunter Biden who was prominently featured as a “star witness” for the House GOP in their impeachment efforts against President Joe Biden, has initiated a $20 million defamation lawsuit against Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD).
Lawsuit
The lawsuit accuses the Democrat from Maryland of “deliberately and maliciously besmirching the character” of Bobulinski tarnishing his reputation.
Legal action
This new legal action joins a series of lawsuits that Bobulinski has filed against Democrats and individuals critical of Trump for the statements they have made about him and his testimony during the impeachment proceedings.
Removal
Similar to his recent legal actions, Bobulinski initially requested a retraction and removal of the alleged defamatory statements before proceeding with his multimillion-dollar lawsuit.
April 10
Bobulinski sent a letter to Raskin on April 10, stating that the congressman did not respond or comply with the demand.
Critical
Raskin, as the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, has been critical of the Republican-led impeachment inquiry and the committee’s investigation into Hunter Biden. While Republicans have praised Bobulinski’s credibility, Raskin has consistently questioned it.
Private testimony
Bobulinski’s complaint alleges that after his private testimony to the Oversight Committee on February 13 and his public appearance before Congress on March 20, Raskin attempted to undermine Bobulinski’s reputation by making false statements on social media.
Espionage
Referring to an interview on MSNBC’s The Weekend on March 31, the lawsuit claims that Raskin accused Bobulinski of espionage for China or Russia and of engaging in criminal activities, thereby damaging his credibility.
False statements
Additionally, the complaint mentions that Raskin posted a clip of the MSNBC interview on his social media platform the next day, “republishing his false statements to an entirely new audience.”
Ridicule
Based on the transcript, Raskin did not directly refer to Bobulinski by name but did ridicule the witnesses brought forth by the GOP in the impeachment investigation, highlighting that “each one is supposed to be the star witness or the breakthrough witness and they turn out to be a Chinese spy or Russian spy or a guy in prison testifying from behind bars because he has defrauded Indian tribes out of tens of millions of dollars.”
Viktor Vekselberg
In both February and March, The Daily Beast covered Bobulinski’s extensive ties to Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg, a prominent figure in the energy sector sanctioned by the U.S. government and closely linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Giant red flags
Raskin has raised concerns about Bobulinski’s association with Vekselberg, particularly in light of conflicting statements from other impeachment witnesses regarding his unsubstantiated allegations about the Bidens, stating that Bobulinski’s background raises “giant red flags.”
Trump’s political pawn
The lawsuit emphasizes Raskin’s retweet on February 14 of a post by House Oversight Democrats, where the congressman referred to Bobulinski as “Donald Trump’s political pawn.” In the statement, Raskin mentioned that Bobulinski failed to substantiate his claims against President Biden with any evidence. Instead, Bobulinski accused various witnesses, FBI agents, and even the Wall Street Journal of dishonesty for refuting his allegations against the Bidens.
March 6
“Then, on March 6, 2024, Defendant issued a statement that House Oversight Democrats posted on X, and Defendant reposted, in which he called Mr. Bobulinski ‘a bitterly frustrated would-be business partner who collaborated with the Trump campaign,’” the lawsuit adds.
Bobulinski lied
Alleging that Raskin uttered these statements “to imply that Mr. Bobulinski lied to Congress to curry favor with President Trump and is a Trump campaign plant,” the complaint goes on to insist that Bobulinski “is not affiliated with the Trump campaign in any way” and “has never lied to Congress.”
Bobulinski’s lawsuit
In Bobulinski’s lawsuit, he claims that Raskin “has been working in tag-team fashion with fellow Oversight Committee member, Rep. Dan Goldman, in a social media blitz of defamatory posts deliberately and maliciously besmirching the character of Mr. Bobulinski.”
20 million
Earlier this month, after previously threatening legal action, Bobulinski sued Goldman for tweeting that he’d “used a Trump campaign-paid lawyer to make false allegations.” The defamation lawsuit seeks damages of $20 million.
10 million
In addition to Goldman and Raskin, the former associate of Hunter Biden is also suing ex-Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson for $10 million. This lawsuit stems from Hutchinson’s mention in her book about his meeting with Trump’s Chief of Staff Mark Meadows in 2020 at a campaign event.
Jessica Tarlov
Furthermore, he recently filed a $30 million lawsuit against liberal Fox News commentator Jessica Tarlov. This legal action was initiated because Tarlov provided only a correction rather than a complete retraction and apology after falsely stating on air that a Trump-affiliated political action committee had covered Bobulinski’s legal expenses.
