In a divided ruling, the Supreme Court lifted a stay on a new Texas law that grants broad authority to police to arrest migrants suspected of crossing the border illegally.

The Biden administration is suing to block the law, arguing it violates federal authority over immigration and will damage international relations and immigration administration.

Texas argues it has a right to take action over what the governor calls an “invasion” at the border.

Under the law, migrants arrested could then be ordered to leave the U.S. while the legal battle over immigration powers plays out in court.

The Supreme Court’s decision allows the law to take effect pending the legal challenge.
