Republican representatives are growing increasingly dissatisfied with Speaker Mike Johnson over his proposed foreign aid package.
Reps. Scott Perry and Jim Banks criticized the plan for allocating over three times as much funding to Ukraine as Israel, while neglecting border security. Perry noted the absence of border funding in the four bills.
“Notice anything missing?” Rep. Scott Perry wrote. Speaker Johnson “failed to incorporate any border security into any of the FOUR of the bills he’s going to ram down our throats this week.”
“On more than half a dozen occasions in the last six months, he promised the American People this wouldn’t happen,” Perry added.
Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who filed a motion to vacate Johnson’s speakership, and Andy Biggs signaled opposition.
Greene said she would vote against merging the bills, and with her support withdrawal, passage is in doubt.
“Israel funding should not be held hostage by Ukraine funding. The American people deserve to know where their senators stand on each funding component,” Rep. Andy Biggs wrote on X.
“MIRV—the process used to merge the bills—is about as ridiculous as ranked choice voting. The least popular option is the one that wins,” he added.
Rep. Thomas Massie became a cosponsor of Greene’s motion and urged Johnson’s resignation, citing issues with FISA, foreign war funding, and outspending Nancy Pelosi.
American Tribune co-founder Jason Robertson asked Rep. Thomas Massie, “What was the straw that broke the Camel’s Back? FISA? Foreign War Funding? Spending more than Nancy Pelosi? All of the above?”
“All of the above,” Massie said. “This camel has a pallet of bricks.”
However, Johnson defiantly declared he would not resign. Discontent among House Republicans appears to be mounting over Johnson’s leadership and priorities.
“I am not resigning, and it is, in my view, an absurd notion that someone would bring a vacate motion when we are simply here trying to do our jobs,” Johnson said.
