Fatal suicide bombing

In a supplementary investigation concerning the fatal suicide bombing during the 2021 U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan, a Marine raised allegations against the Pentagon, claiming that they had concealed information indicating that the incident could have been prevented.

Former Sgt. Tyler Vargas-Andrews caused a commotion when he testified in March 2023 that he and others on the ground had identified an individual near Abbey Gate as the potential suicide bomber while he was in the guard tower, but were not allowed to take action.

Following CENTCOM’s initiation of a new inquiry into his claims, which failed to substantiate them, the former sniper informed the Daily Caller News Foundation that he acknowledged the individual suspected of being the bomber at the time was different from the person the Pentagon had recently identified as the perpetrator.

Nonetheless, he maintained his testimony. “That is the truth. For anyone to say that this wasn’t preventable when we had on the ground intel passed to us stating the threat, it’s bullshit. We were told that the bomber was headed to Abbey Gate in real time, we all knew that,” he said.

“I believe that a lot has been covered up,” he added.

As a result of the bombing, Vargas-Andrews suffered the loss of two limbs, with the attack claiming the lives of 13 U.S. service members and causing casualties among numerous Afghan civilians.

The secondary investigation revealed that Marines positioned in and around the watchtower near Hamid Karzai International Airport’s Abbey Gate might have mistaken informal real-time reports from service members as official intelligence that had not undergone verification, as reported by The Washington Post.
Prevented

“Over the past two years, some service members have claimed that they had the bomber in their sights, and they could have prevented the attack,” a U.S. official on the supplemental review team said on Friday, according to CNN. “But we now know that is not correct.”
Primary threat

Although Vargas-Andrews contested the conclusion, he acknowledged that the individual whom Marines considered the primary threat at the time turned out not to be the actual bomber, as he informed the Post.
November 2021

The initial investigation, finalized in November 2021, determined that a lone suicide bomber had evaded Taliban checkpoints.

However, the investigation did not indicate that the perpetrator had been recognized or that a request to engage had been relayed up the chain of command, as indicated by interview records.

Being a retired Marine and having served most of my military career with the ground (infantry) side. I would like to think the Marines on the perimeter would have first-hand knowledge of any possible suicide bombers approaching the area. I feel a walk, or no walk zone could have potentially prevented the attack. Anyone passing the no walk zone would be dealt with in a quick, silent but deadly way.
