Former WNBA player Val Whiting criticized the growing push for transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.
Whiting said on social media that it is neither fair nor safe for biological women to compete against trans women, and that there needs to be another solution allowing trans women to compete athletically besides having them play against biological females.
Whiting cited her experience playing professionally in leagues before and during the WNBA’s inception.
A lot of my basketball sisters feel differently but trans women do not belong in women’s sports. It’s not fair nor safe for biological women. There has to be another solution for trans women to be able to compete athletically besides having them compete against biological women.

Her comments came as the NAIA approved a measure banning males identifying as female from competing in women’s sports.
The council passed the historic rule change unanimously without opposition.
“A lot of my basketball sisters feel differently but trans women do not belong in women’s sports,” Whiting wrote on X.
“It’s not fair nor safe for biological women. There has to be another solution for trans women to be able to compete athletically besides having them compete against biological women.”
The new transgender athlete ban replaces a previous policy only covering postseason competition.
Whiting argued strongly in favor of keeping women’s sports as a space for solely biological females.
