House Republicans criticized President Biden for issuing a proclamation declaring March 31, 2024 as Transgender Day of Visibility, as that date falls on Easter that year.
Speaker Mike Johnson doubted if Biden fully understood what he was signing due to questions about his mental acuity.
“Well, it’s his own signature on the document. That’s why we posted it,” Johnson said. “The evidence speaks for itself, as we used to say in the courtroom.”
Johnson said the proclamation highlighted the contrast between conservative and progressive visions for America.
While the White House noted Biden didn’t choose the date, Republicans felt it took precedence over Easter, Christianity’s most sacred day.
“[I]t’s highly possible that he doesn’t even know what he’s signing,” Johnson said. “[T]hat might be even more alarming.”
“This radical, leftist, progressive vision for the country is not who we are as Americans, and I think most of the country agrees with us – And I think that’s why we’re going to have a very successful election in November,” he said.
“[They] believe [that day] is for one celebration only – the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated.
However, Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock defended Biden and instead criticized Johnson for finding transgender people “abhorrent.”
The proclamation designated the annual observance started in 2009 to commemorate the transgender community.
