The court sided with election integrity advocates who argued that undated or incorrectly dated mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania should not be counted.

In a 2-1 ruling, the appeals court overturned a previous decision and found that the state requirement for a dated signature on mail-in ballots is valid and mandatory under state law.

“This ruling will have far-reaching effects regarding left-wing attempts to weaponize the Materiality Provision of the Civil Rights Act across the country and represents a victory for mail ballot safeguards in a crucial swing state,” the organization wrote.

The RNC celebrated the ruling as a victory for election security and a setback to those seeking to weaken ballot integrity rules through litigation.

The decision provides support for ongoing GOP legal efforts around signature and date requirements for absentee ballots.

“The Pennsylvania General Assembly has decided that mail-in voters must date the declaration on the return envelope of their ballot to make their vote effective,” the ruling said. “The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania unanimously held this ballot-casting rule is mandatory; thus, failure to comply renders a ballot invalid under Pennsylvania law.”
