The House has voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for neglect of duty and breach of public trust related to border security and immigration policy failures under the Biden administration.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has submitted formal articles of impeachment to the Senate, urging an expedited trial set for April 10.

Johnson and 11 other Republicans accuse Mayorkas of failing to enforce immigration laws and being deceitful to Congress and the public about the border crisis.

“As Speaker and impeachment managers of the U.S. House of Representatives, we write to inform you that we will present to you upon the Senate’s return, on April 10, 2024, the duly passed articles of impeachment regarding Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas,” Johnson wrote. “We urge you to schedule a trial of the matter expeditiously.”

“The Secretary is responsible for releasing millions of illegal aliens into the interior and creating unlawful massparole programs,” Johnson added.

“Throughout his tenure, he has repeatedly lied to Congress and the American people about the scope of the crisis and his role in it. His unlawful actions are responsible for the historic crisis that has devastated communities throughout our country, from the smallest border town in Texas to New York City,” Johnson wrote.

“The constitutional grounds for Secretary Mayorkas’ conviction and removal from office are well-founded, and the historical record is clear,” the letter read.

While a Senate conviction is unlikely given the Democratic majority, supporters see it as fulfilling their constitutional duty to address executive overreach.

The impeachment sets the stage for heated debate over immigration issues central to political discourse heading into the 2024 election.

Critics argue the evidence does not meet the standard for impeachment and see it as a partisan effort given the improbability of conviction.
