The House Ethics Committee announced an investigation into Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) related to his campaign finances.
Nehls stated he would cooperate and that his books were open, claiming compliance with all FEC laws.
“My campaign has complied with every Federal Election Commission (FEC) law, and my books are open,” Nehls said.
The bipartisan committee did not provide specifics but will announce how it will proceed by May 10.
Nehls has a colorful personality and is known for controversial comments, such as calling the husband of Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) a “thug.”
His campaign reported losing over $150,000 to wire fraud last year, though it recovered most of the funds.
Before Congress, Nehls was fired from the Richmond police department for policy violations like evidence mishandling.
The Ethics Committee investigates House rules violations and can refer criminal cases to the Department of Justice.
