Liz Cheney criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to hear arguments on Donald Trump’s claim of presidential immunity in the federal election interference case, calling it a delay tactic.
Cheney said it cannot be the case that a president can attempt to overturn an election and seize power without the justice system being able to hold them accountable before the next election.
“I think it’s very important that the Supreme Court recognize that what he’s doing is a delaying tactic,” Cheney said.
She urged the Court to recognize Trump’s appeal is intended to delay and suppress evidence the public has a right to see.
Cheney expressed hope the Court will deal with Trump’s claim in an expedited and responsible manner, while acknowledging further delays could prevent the public from seeing evidence against Trump in open court.
She said, “It cannot be the case that a president of the United States can attempt to overturn an election and seize power. And that our justice system is incapable of holding a trial, of holding him to account before the next election. That cannot be the case.”
She said, “But recognize that taking action that will result in further delay in preventing the American people from seeing that evidence in open court is itself suppression of the evidence that the American people have a right to see that evidence. And the court ought to recognize that.”
“It cannot be the case that a President of the United States can attempt to overturn an election and seize power and that our justice system is incapable…of holding him to account before the next election,” Cheney said.
Her remarks echoed those of fellow Jan. 6 committee member Adam Schiff, who had asked the Court to swiftly reject Trump’s “bogus” immunity claim.
