U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Southern California seized nearly 3,000 pounds of methamphetamine worth millions of dollars hidden in a shipment of carrots.
At the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility near San Diego, officers stopped a 44-year-old driver hauling a tractor trailer manifested as carrying carrots.
Inspecting the shipment, officers found hundreds of orange packages containing meth under the carrots.
They seized a total of 574 packages weighing approximately 2,900 pounds of meth with an estimated street value in the millions.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the exceptional work by our CBP officers,” said Rosa E. Hernandez, port director for Otay Mesa Port of Entry. “While facilitating lawful trade and travel, our officers steadfastly combat the trafficking of dangerous drugs at our borders.”
Since October, CBP has seized over 49,000 pounds of meth, highlighting the ongoing efforts to intercept illegal drug shipments at the border.
