The City of Chicago filed a lawsuit against handgun manufacturer Glock in March 2024, claiming the company is liable for the ease with which its semiautomatic handguns can be converted into fully automatic weapons using “Glock switches.”
Partnering with Everytown for Gun Safety, Chicago alleges over 1,100 converted Glocks have been recovered in crimes over the past two years.
The lawsuit argues Glock engages in unfair business practices, negligence and public nuisance by selling guns easily made automatic without mitigation efforts.
The mayor commented the switches create a “deadly new frontier” in gun violence.
“The City of Chicago is encountering a deadly new frontier in the gun violence plaguing our communities because of the increase of fully automatic Glocks on our streets,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said.

This is the first suit filed under Illinois’ new Firearms Industry Responsibility Act.
While Chicago points to China as a source of illegal auto sears, reports indicate Chinese companies regulated by the government are shipping thousands of the switches which convert handguns into machine guns.
The case is being heard in Cook County Circuit Court.
