Ford will lay off about two-thirds of the workforce at its plant that builds the Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck due to slower than expected EV sales growth.

While EV sales are up overall, they are not keeping pace with ambitious targets, and hybrids remain more popular with many consumers.

“Ford will drastically cut the number of hourly workers at its factory that builds the Ford F-150 Lightning as sales of electric vehicles slow,” one report noted.

Ford will transfer 700 workers to another plant and offer 700 others retirement or reassignment packages.

Ford failed to recognize the reluctance of normal consumers to spend tens of thousands on unreliable EVs that don’t offer the convenience of gas vehicles.

“While EV sales are growing in the U.S.,” the report added, “the pace is falling well short of the industry’s ambitious timetable, and many consumers are turning to hybrid vehicles instead.”

“Of the 2,100 workers who make up three work crews at the Dearborn facility, a third will remain. … Ford will transfer 700 workers to” to a different plant, and the rest will “either take a retirement package offered during last year’s contract talks with the United Auto Workers or will take a reassignment in southeast Michigan.”

Manufacturers and media campaigns cannot artificially create demand among practical-minded customers wary of issues like limited range and long charging times.

Mass EV adoption will only come when the technology ensures the hassle-free driving experience that gas vehicles provide.
