A Qatari government official and member of the royal family, Sheikh Sultan bin Jassim Al Thani, invested $50 million in Newsmax in 2019-2020, helping launch it as a competitor to Fox News, according to leaked documents.

At the time, Newsmax was rapidly expanding its operations but needed funds.

Qatar was facing an economic blockade by Saudi Arabia and others.

Before and after the investment, Newsmax newsroom leaders told staff to go easy on coverage of Qatar, with at least one host reprimanded for remarks about the nation.

A source said “We were not allowed to criticize Qatar” and they were clearly told from top executives “no touching this.”

A Newsmax rep denied slanting coverage to favor Qatar.
