The number of illegal migrants crossing the English Channel from France reached a record high in the first three months of 2022, with over 4,600 arrivals despite UK government claims of success curbing crossings.

Daily arrivals in late March pushed the quarterly total past previous highs.

While PM Rishi Sunak credited extra UK funding for French patrols with reducing 2021’s record crossings, bad weather likely influenced numbers more.

The government’s plan to send some migrants to Rwanda to claim asylum has been on hold since summer 2022 due to legal challenges.

Failure to prevent daily Channel crossings has become a political issue, as public dissatisfaction grows over uncontrolled immigration.

Legislation aimed at restarting the Rwanda plan has faced delays, pushing back the potential start date to at least June.

“The legislation is dealing with a migration emergency, and we are introducing that legislation as soon as we possibly can to reduce the number of people taking the perilous journey across the Channel,” the Prime Minister’s official spokesman stated.
