Senator John Kennedy questioned a climate expert witness, Gus Schumacher, at a Senate hearing, exposing Schumacher’s lack of knowledge about basic climate science.
When asked what carbon dioxide is, Schumacher laughed and admitted he only knew it was a gas from high school.
“What is carbon dioxide?” Kennedy asked.
“I’m — I went to high school,” Schumacher said. “But that’s, uh, carbon dioxide is a gas.”
“OK,” Kennedy said.
Schumacher did not know carbon dioxide makes up a minuscule 0.04% of the atmosphere or its role in climate change.
“I’m not a, not a professional to talk about carbon dioxide so much, but…” Schumacher said.
“Carbon dioxide is, what I see it as is, you know, a gas that exists in our atmosphere,” Kennedy said.
“Is it the major part of our atmosphere?” Kennedy asked.
“It’s a huge part of our atmosphere,” Schumacher said.
“It’s actually a very small part of our atmosphere,” Kennedy said.
“Well, OK. But, yeah. I don’t know. What are you asking specifically?” Schumacher asked.
“You said we need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions,” Kennedy said. “I’d like to know first if you know what it is.”
Schumacher advocated reducing carbon dioxide emissions but could not provide details on timelines or plans for transitioning away from fossil fuels.
“I would like to see it come as fast as possible,” Schumacher said.
“How fast?” Kennedy asked.
“I’m not — I don’t have that,” Schumacher said.
Kennedy’s questioning revealed Schumacher had little expertise beyond experiencing changes to winter weather in his home state of Alaska.
