According to a Politico report, the Biden administration is considering a plan to grant green cards to some illegal immigrants already in the U.S.

Specifically, the plan would open up access to the “cancellation of removal” program for those living in the country over 10 years who have citizen or resident family members who would “suffer” if they were deported.

“One idea that has been floated among administration officials is opening access to the cancellation of removal program for people who have lived in the U.S. for over 10 years and have citizen or resident relatives who would ‘suffer’ if they were deported,” one report noted.

“If specific requirements are met and an immigration judge approves cancellation of removal, a migrant is able to obtain a green card,” it noted.

While the administration has not committed to any strategy, the idea has been floated amid the ongoing border crisis.

Critics argue granting green cards would only encourage more illegal crossings, and that Biden has done little to curb the crisis by reversing Trump-era border policies from the start of his term.

However, the administration also seeks to appease immigration hardliners while not alienating those calling for more open borders.
