Crews renovating North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina discovered what may have been a secret moonshine hold underneath the grandstands.

Moonshining was integral to the origins of NASCAR racing. When a sinkhole opened up, officials found a 700 square foot area that would have been ideal for secretly making and storing illegal moonshine during Prohibition.

“When we began renovating and restoring North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2022, we’d often hear stories of how an old moonshine still was operated here on the property under the grandstands,” Speedway Motorsports Vice President of Operations and Development Steve Swift stated.

As the location of one of NASCAR’s earliest tracks, opening in 1947, Wilkes County was once the moonshine capital of the state.

The discovery aligns with long-standing rumors of a hidden moonshine operation at the track.

“Well, we haven’t found a still (yet), but we’ve found a small cave and an interior wall that would have been the perfect location to not only make illegal liquor, but to hide from the law as well. We don’t know how people would have gotten in and out, but as we uncover more, there’s no telling what we might find,” Swift said.

Officials plan to continue repairs ahead of the upcoming NASCAR All-Star Race, the first major event at the restored speedway in decades.
