Hunter Biden sought to help a Chinese energy company linked to the Communist Party of China, CEFC China Energy, acquire the American nuclear reactor maker Westinghouse in 2016.
To allay concerns, Hunter provided a letter stating CEFC would be shielded in the transaction.
This would have benefited CEFC’s goal of expanding in the global nuclear market under the guise of a separate acquisition.
At the time, Westinghouse was financially struggling but a top nuclear firm. Hunter leveraged his proximity to the Obama administration for the deal.
James Biden also confirmed to the FBI he and the Biden family tried assisting the same CEFC in purchasing a Louisiana liquified natural gas facility, though it did not occur.
The episode is part of an ongoing House investigation into Biden family members receiving payments from foreign business ventures during Joe Biden’s vice presidency, including two grandchildren, raising conflict of interest concerns.
