Vice President Kamala Harris stated that “nobody should go to jail for smoking weed” despite having prosecuted nearly 2,000 marijuana cases as California attorney general.
Her position appears motivated by poor approval ratings for Biden-Harris as they trail Trump in swing states.
At a roundtable on cannabis reform, Harris condemned prosecuting those who smoke marijuana.
However, as attorney general, Harris oversaw over 1,000 convictions for marijuana possession, cultivation or sale according to Reuters, though most did not serve jail time.
“I believe – I think we all at this table believe – nobody should have to go to jail for smoking weed,” she said. “And what we need to do is recognize that far too many people have been sent to jail for simple marijuana possession.”
While later as senator she supported decriminalizing marijuana, Tulsi Gabbard criticized her in 2016 for putting over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and laughing about smoking it herself.
“She put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations,” Gabbard said. “And then laughed about it when she asked if she ever smoked marijuana.”
Harris’s record on prosecuting marijuana cases is complicated and appears at odds with her current decriminalization stance driven by political considerations.
