Olivia Colman claimed that as a woman in Hollywood, she would earn significantly more money if her name was “Oliver” rather than dealing with the gender pay gap.
She cited being aware of one instance where the pay disparity between a male and female actor was 12,000%.
“I’m very aware that if I was Oliver Colman, I would be earning a [expletive] of a lot more than I am. I know of one pay disparity, which is a 12,000% difference,” she said.
Colman and Claire Foy, who previously played Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, both argued they were paid less than their male co-star Matt Smith.
“I was deeply hurt by [the pay gap], because I’d been working on that show for two years. I loved everybody on it,” Colman said.
However, Michael Caine has disputed that a gender pay gap exists in Hollywood, using his experience working with Elizabeth Taylor as an example where she earned much more than him decades ago.
“It’s rubbish. I worked with Elizabeth Taylor and she got 10 times more than I did — and that was over 30 years ago,” Caine said.
“I don’t agree about the pay gap because she got a lot more money than me,” Caine added.
While issues around equal pay for equal work continue to be debated, Colman and Foy believe their high-profile roles still did not result in compensation equal to their famous male counterparts.
