Actress Blake Lively has publicly apologized for mocking photos of Catherine, Princess of Wales, on social media prior to the announcement that Catherine was battling cancer.
In a since-deleted post, Lively had jokingly commented on perceived photoshopping in an image of Catherine with her children.
Now aware of Catherine’s health issues, Lively expressed regret, saying the post left her feeling “mortified.”
“I’m sure no one cares today but I feel like I have to acknowledge this,” Lively said. “I made a silly post around the ‘photoshop fails’ frenzy, and oh man, that post has me mortified today. I’m sorry. Sending love and well wishes to all, always.”
Other celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Stephen Colbert also face backlash for previous jokes at Catherine’s expense.
Colbert received legal threats over a monologue where he speculated about rumors of an affair between Prince William and another woman.
“Now, there have been rumors [of] an affair between William and the Marching Band of Chicanery since 2019,” Colbert joked.
“According to tabloids back then, when Kate supposedly confronted him about it, he laughed it off saying there was nothing to it. Always a good response when your wife accuses you of cheating,” he joked with a fake accent. “Ha ha, imagine me having an affair! It is to laugh.”
Many social media users have criticized the celebrities and said apologies are needed for bullying or making light of a woman now known to be facing cancer.
“Well done for making fun of a woman with cancer,” one X user wrote.
“You bullied a woman with cancer,” another said.
As scrutiny grows, entertainers are facing pressure to acknowledge insensitive comments targeting Catherine in light of her diagnosis.
