The entire staff at a Dollar General store in Wisconsin resigned after their shifts, leaving a sign that said “We quit!” due to being overworked, underpaid and the store’s excessive waste and inability to donate food close to expiration.
The general manager said she and others had discussed quitting for months and she had been working 7 days a week since Christmas.
While the store had donated over 7,500 pounds of food to local banks in the past year, the staff took issue with throwing away items like coffee and cereal near expiration that could have been donated.
Their mass resignation forced the store to close temporarily.
“It’s sickening, and it’s saddening, especially for someone that has morals,” former general manager Trina Tribolet said. “If you’ve ever been at the bottom and never had anything, you know what it feels like to see items get thrown away. That could have gone to somebody that needed them.”
“We’re throwing away coffee that’s not expired but it’s close. Or you’re throwing out a box of Lucky Charms that you know there’s a whole world of kids who would love to eat those,” Tribolet said.
“But you can’t donate them out because you’re supposed to throw them away. There have been tears that have been shed.”
Dollar General defended their donation policy but Feeding America guidelines allow donations of canned goods nearing expiration.
The resignations drew attention to work conditions and waste at the major chain which employs over 163,000 across 19,000+ stores and earns $39 billion annually.
