Supermodel Christie Brinkley shared her experience being diagnosed with skin cancer during a routine doctor’s appointment for her daughter.
In graphic Instagram photos, she showed the procedure to remove the basal cell carcinoma from her skin.
“The good news for me is we caught the basal cell Carcinoma early. And I had great Doctors that removed the cancer and stitched me up to perfection like an haute couture Dior,” Brinkley said.
Brinkley stressed the importance of sun protection and regular total body checkups.
She noted she likely only found her cancer because she asked her daughter’s doctor to examine a small dot on her skin at the end of the appointment.
“The good news for you is that all of this can be avoided by being diligent with your sun protection! I got serious a bit late so now for this ole mermaid/gardener, I’ll be slathering on my SPF 30, reapplying as needed, wearing long sleeves and a wide brim hat. And doing regular total body check ups..that is a MUST!,” she said.
Brinkley advised followers to make checkup appointments and “slather up” with sunscreen.
“I was lucky to find mine, because I was accompanying one of my daughters to HER check up… The Doctor was looking at each freckle with a magnifying glass… it wasn’t my appointment so I wasn’t going to say anything but at the VERY end I asked if he could just look at a little tiny dot I could feel as I applied my foundation. He took a look and knew immediately it needed a biopsy! He did it then and there! So make your own good luck by making that check up appointment today. And slather up my friends!,” she added.
To celebrate her 70th birthday in February, she posted a swimsuit photo and poem emphasizing making the most of the year by exercising, eating well and enjoying adventures despite aging.
“This is 70, and you’ve nothing to fear, Because you can make it your very own favorite year! It’s up to you, it’s in your power To choose to celebrate, instead of cower. You know what to do, Exercise and eat right, use your sunblock and don’t sit under overhead lights! Be curious, explore and go on adventures, just don’t forget, to pack your dentures… Seriously, laugh and love with all your might …and I promise you 70 will be all right!” she wrote.
