The Republican Study Committee proposed raising the Social Security retirement age and reducing benefits for higher earners to cut spending on entitlement programs by trillions over the next decade.

This plan would tie eligibility ages to increasing lifespans and phase out some benefits for affluent retirees.

President Biden has strongly opposed cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

“If anyone here tries to cut Social Security, Medicare, or raise the retirement age, I will stop you,” Biden said.

“Anytime there’s been any reforms in history – President Clinton, President Reagan – had a slow migration of age changes for people that are 18, 19 years old,” Rep. Kevin Hern said.

He argued that popular programs should be supported by tax increases on high-income individuals rather than benefit reductions.

The proposals set up an election-year debate over the future of entitlement spending.

“There’s a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting,” Trump said, later noting that he “will never do anything that will jeopardize or hurt Social Security or Medicare.”
