A dozen House Democrats broke ranks to help Republicans pass a resolution criticizing President Biden’s immigration policies and urging him to take action in lieu of congressional fixes.
The 14 defectors joined all 212 GOP members in approval, while 193 Democrats opposed it.
The resolution faults Biden for creating the worst border crisis and calls for ending catch-and-release policies.
Authored by Rep. De La Cruz, it underscores the need for Biden to take decisive action.
“The current state of our nation’s border security is unsustainable,” De La Cruz said. “The policies put forth by the Biden administration have resulted in the worst border security crisis in our nation’s history, endangering our communities and straining our resources.”
The resolution “underscores the urgent need for the Biden administration to take decisive action to address the crisis at our border,” she added. “We urge the administration to immediately begin utilizing the authorities available to them to regain control of the situation and protect the interests of the American people.”
This is the latest in a series of bipartisan measures rebuking Biden’s border handling.
While the GOP passed a restrictive asylum bill, the Democrat-controlled Senate refused to consider it.
Bipartisan Senate immigration talks also fell apart last month.
“I have always believed that Democrats can be strong on border security while also respecting the rights of migrants to claim asylum,” Rep. Henry Cueller wrote on X. “Let’s get the job done.”
