Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been indicted on charges of falsifying his COVID-19 vaccination status in official records in 2021 and 2022.

An investigation found false entries registering Bolsonaro, his daughter, and others in his circle as vaccinated.

An investigation “found several false insertions between November 2021 and December 2022, and also many actions of using fraudulent documents,” police detective Fábio Alvarez Shor stated.

One instance occurred prior to a visit to Florida after losing reelection.

Bolsonaro was a critic of COVID vaccines. If convicted, he faces 2-12 years in prison.

His lawyer called the charges “absurd” and politically motivated.

“When he was president, he was completely exempted from showing any kind of certificate on his trips. This is political persecution and an attempt to void the enormous political capital that has only grown,” attorney Fábio Wajngarten said.

Bolsonaro remains popular with supporters who see him as an “honest man” facing political persecution.

“We couldn’t let our captain down at such a difficult time for him,” supporter Antonio Carlos said.

“The judges want to imprison Bolsonaro because he’s an honest man,” Carlos said.

“We’re also here to defend our freedom — Brazil is sinking into dictatorship,” he said. “All of this is nonsense. Bolsonaro is a victim of persecution!”

During his term as president, Bolsonaro was often compared to former U.S. President Donald Trump for his style.
