An 18-year-old college student in Nashville was fatally shot by a stray bullet in November 2023.
The alleged shooter, Shaquille Taylor, had been previously released from custody in May after being found mentally unfit to stand trial for prior assault charges.
Despite his long criminal history and mental instability, Taylor was released back onto the streets rather than involuntarily committed.
He has now been charged months later for the student’s murder.
A new bill in Tennessee aims to address this loophole and better protect the public from potentially violent offenders.
“We are frustrated by this essentially loophole in the system that allows this to happen. If there is a determination that someone is mentally unwell, then there should be some way to handle that in a manner that won’t allow them to get back onto the street,” the victim’s father stated.
The student’s death is seen as yet another tragic example of the system failing to serve and protect law-abiding citizens.
