President Biden has misleadingly attacked recent comments by Donald Trump about potential consequences for the American auto industry if Democrats remain in power.

Trump had warned of a “bloodbath” but was clearly referring to the manufacturing sector, not implying physical violence.

“Let me tell you something,” Trump said. “To China, if you’re listening, President Xi [Jinping] … Those big, monster car manufacturing plants that you’re building in Mexico right now — and you think you’re gonna get that, you’re going to not hire Americans and you’re going to sell the cars to us.”

“No. We’re going to put a 100 percent tariff on every single car that comes across the line and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars — if I get elected,” he said.

“Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole — that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country.”

However, Biden posted edited clips on social media suggesting otherwise, as part of portraying Trump as a threat to democracy.

“Our freedoms are on the ballot. Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are trying to take them away,” Biden said. “We will not let them.”

Critics have noted the hypocrisy, as Biden himself in 2020 warned against letting the Democratic primary become a “negative bloodbath” – which drew little controversy.

“What we can’t let happen is let this primary become a negative bloodbath,” Biden said in 2020. “I know I’m going to get a lot of suggestions on how to respond to what I suspect will be an increasingly negative campaign that the Bernie brothers will run. But we can’t tear this party apart and re-elect Trump.”

“We can’t tear this party apart and re-elect Trump. We have to keep our eyes on the ball, in my view,” he added.

They argue “bloodbath” is often used metaphorically in politics but the media now takes the word literally only when said by Trump.
