A Georgia couple was arrested in Daytona Beach, Florida after authorities found them passed out drunk on the beach while their two young children, ages 5 and 7, were unsupervised.

When asked by deputies where the children were, the man motioned toward the ocean.

The children were eventually located swimming unattended in a nearby hotel pool.

Empty alcohol containers were strewn about the beach area near the couple.

Both parents were charged with child neglect, while the man faces additional charges for attempting to escape from deputies and having alcohol on the beach.

The local sheriff criticized the couple’s irresponsible behavior in allowing their young kids to wander off unsupervised while the parents were highly intoxicated.

“It just boggles my mind that you would drive here and get obliterated and allow a 5- and a 7-year-old to wander off,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.

“When we wonder what we see, why kids are the way they are, you gotta take a step back and look at who’s in charge. And clearly, these two clowns shouldn’t be in charge of … they can’t be in charge of themselves, let alone a 5-year-old or a 7-year-old,” Chitwood said.
