The Brazilian federal police have formally accused former President Jair Bolsonaro of fraud related to falsified COVID-19 vaccination records.

An investigation found Bolsonaro’s records were altered to indicate he received a vaccine in Sao Paulo in July 2021 when he was actually not in the city.

Police determined Bolsonaro and one of his former aides, Mauro Cid, who has since pleaded guilty, committed fraud by obtaining fake vaccination certificates.

The police report opens the door for criminal charges against Bolsonaro for falsifying public health data and forming a criminal organization to evade health rules during the pandemic.

Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing, but the police say the fraudulent certificates were issued to avoid complying with pandemic safety measures, as Bolsonaro had downplayed the virus and vaccination efforts while president.

“It’s a selective investigation. I’m calm,” Bolsonaro said. “The world knows that I didn’t take the vaccine.”
