A New York Times survey found only half of New York City residents plan to stay in the city, despite heavy support for Democrats in recent elections.

Residents gave poor ratings to public education, public safety, cleanliness, and government services.

Overall quality of life ratings plunged from over 50% excellent/good in 2017 and 2008 to under 30% now.

Safety ratings dramatically fell for subways during and after dark as well as walking alone at night.

The pandemic is blamed but crime rates rose after 2019.

“The drop is stark,” Citizens Budget Commission president Andrew Rein said. In 2017, New York City was “seven years into a really robust recovery,” he noted.

Mentioned were increased murders, robies, assaults and grand larcenies.

New Yorkers expressed marked unease with public transit and streets at night.

Despite voting for policies ending stop-and-frisk, supporting sanctuary cities, and releasing violent criminals, Democrats now complain about declining safety and quality of life in the city they backed politically.
