The father of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old woman murdered in February 2023 while out for a morning run, said her accused killer may not have been in the U.S. if border security was stronger.
Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, arrived at the southern border in September 2022 and was quickly released into the interior by DHS.
Jason Riley, aware of Ibarra’s illegal status, suggested his daughter may be alive had secure borders prevented Ibarra’s entry.
While not wanting her death politicized, Riley acknowledged anger that sanctuary policies in New York and failure to cooperate with ICE in Georgia enabled Ibarra to remain free after prior arrests, potentially leading to the killing of his “angel” daughter who deserved better.
“I do know that … he’s here illegally, that he might not have been here had we had secure borders,” Jason Riley said. “I feel like she’s being used somewhat politically … it makes me angry. She was much better than that.”
Ibarra remains jailed as the grieving father finds strength knowing his daughter watches over him from above.
“It has made me so much stronger,” Jason Riley said.
