The governors of Indiana and Utah recently signed bills prohibiting credit card companies from tracking firearm and ammunition purchase information in their states.

Such laws are designed to protect privacy and prevent political abuse of individuals’ lawful gun purchasing data.

“The laws are designed to protect the privacy of lawful and private firearm and ammunition purchases from being abused for political purposes by corporate financial service providers and unlawful government search and seizure of legal and private financial transactions,” NSSF stated.

Several other states have enacted similar restrictions in response to Visa initially agreeing under pressure to flag gun/ammo purchases with a new code.

While Visa, Mastercard and Discover later paused plans for nationwide gun tracking, they are implementing codes to comply with a new California law requiring credit cards to monitor gun sales by 2025.

The new Indiana and Utah bills aim to preempt credit companies from involuntarily tracking individuals’ gun purchasing activities and financial information within their borders.
