A conservative nonprofit criticized CNN for refusing to air an ad during the State of the Union that blamed President Biden’s border policies for the murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley.
The ad focused on Riley’s killing by an undocumented immigrant, Jose Ibarra, and argued Biden’s stance on deportation and sanctuary cities enabled Ibarra to kill Riley after previous arrests.
“CNN and Joe Biden are in lockstep once again,” Building America’s Future Advisor Phil Cox stated.
“It is shameful that CNN is censoring the truth and trying to protect President Biden by refusing to air this ad. The American people understand that Biden’s open borders agenda is responsible for the death of Laken Riley,” Cox added.
“Building America’s Future won’t be deterred when it comes to the important work of informing the public on how we are all less safe in Joe Biden’s America.”
CNN said the ad made unsubstantiated claims and did not meet its standards, while airing on Fox News and MSNBC.
“The advertisement did not meet commercial clearance guidelines and policies,” a CNN spokesperson stated.
A CNN source noted that “all ads that run on our air go through a review to ensure we are presenting factual and accurate information to our audience.”
Riley’s death has become a focal point in debates around the border crisis.
During the State of the Union, Biden appeared to refer to Riley as “Lincoln” rather than her actual name, prompting backlash from Riley’s mother who said Biden was trying to minimize her daughter’s murder.
“Biden does not even KNOW my child’s name – it’s pathetic! If you are going to say her name (even when forced to do so) at least say the right name!” Laken’s mother, Allyson Phillips, wrote online.
