A former chair of the Florida Republican Party and the American Conservative Union expressed dismay over the takeover of the Republican National Committee by allies of Donald Trump.

Al Cardenas likened it to the “demise” of the GOP and said it “breaks my heart” given the decades he devoted to the party.

He explained that the RNC will now solely focus on propelling Trump’s 2024 bid rather than supporting down-ballot candidates.

“I’m talking like a funeral with you, you know? 1854, the birth of the Republican Party; 2024, the demise of the Republican Party,” GOP chair Al Cardenas said.

Cardenas also criticized the RNC for spending millions perpetuating the false election fraud narrative from 2020.

He warned that losing the grassroots work of the RNC risks isolating communities and could lead the US into a constitutional crisis if Trump wins in 2024.

The RNC is basically “spending millions to perpetuate the fallacy that there was election fraud in 2020,” he said. “That’s all. That’s all it is. But replacing the RNC and what it does, to me, I’ve given it 40 years of my life. It breaks my heart.”

“It takes away a major component of getting your communities involved in the political process,” he added. “And now it’s all going to be dictated from the top, and you wonder what our future will be down the ballot.”

America “may well descend into a Constitutional crisis from day one of his regime” unless “we defeat DJTrump in November,” he wrote.
