President Biden promoted two aides implicated in his mishandling of classified documents within a day of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report finding Biden retained classified materials after leaving office.
Annie Tomasini, who visited Biden’s center where documents were later found, became deputy chief of staff.
Biden “willfully retained classified materials after the end of his vice presidency when he was a private citizen,” Hur’s investigation found.
Richard Ruffner, Biden’s personal aide, became director of Oval Office operations.
Both likely knew of the documents. Republicans criticized this as corruption and a failure to hold Biden accountable like Trump.
The promotions come despite Hur declining to charge Biden due to memory issues.
The House Oversight Committee is blocked from interviewing Tomasini and calls the promotions a reward rather than consequence for mishandling classified information.
“The Department of Justice has failed to deliver accountability for President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents and now Biden aides involved in the scandal are getting promotions,” House Oversight Committee Chairman Republican Rep. James Comer stated.
“We’ve requested to interview Annie Tomasini about President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents but the White House is blocking her testimony and instead has promoted her to a senior role. The American people expect consequences for mishandling of classified information, not rewards,” he added.
