Senator Bill Cassidy and Senator Mitt Romney have both refused to endorse former President Donald Trump for the upcoming election.
Cassidy expressed concerns about Trump’s rhetoric and avoided committing to supporting him, opting to vote for a Republican candidate instead.
“The general tone of the speech is why many Americans continue to wonder should President Trump be president. That kind of rhetoric, it’s always on the edge, maybe doesn’t cross, maybe does, depending upon your perspective,” Cassidy said.
“I also think, though, that the mainstream media contributes to it. If you take the one about the bloodbath, which arguably could be about an economic bloodbath, not about kind of street violence related to the election, then it gives his defenders something to focus on as something which was distorted,” he added.
“So, yes, he always walks up to the edge on that rhetoric. And again, that’s why people are concerned,” he said.
“At this point, all I will say is that I plan to vote for a Republican for the presidency of the United States,” Cassidy said.
Romney, on the other hand, stated that he is open to voting for a Democrat over Trump.
“I’d be happy to support virtually any one of the Republicans, maybe not Vivek, but the others that are running would be acceptable to me and I’d be happy to vote for them. I’d be happy to vote for a number of the Democrats too. I mean, it would be an upgrade from, in my opinion, from Donald Trump and perhaps also from Joe Biden,” Romney said.
Despite this, Trump has gained endorsements from some Republican critics, including Governor Brian Kemp and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
