Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs vetoed a Republican bill that would have authorized state law enforcement to arrest illegal immigrants.
The “Arizona Border Invasion Act” would have allowed police to charge illegal border crossers with misdemeanors for initial arrests and felonies for subsequent arrests.
Hobbs claimed in her veto letter that the bill did not actually secure the border and would harm businesses that employ illegal immigrants.
State Senator Janae Shamp criticized Hobbs, saying the legislature did its job to protect citizens but Hobbs failed in her duty by vetoing the bill.
“The legislature did its job to protect our citizens, but Governor Hobbs failed to do hers,” Shamp said.
Shamp accused Hobbs of perpetuating chaos and the open border crisis as an accomplice to Biden.
Over 250,000 illegal immigrants had been encountered in Arizona’s Tucson border sector from October 2023 to January 2024, according to the text.
