Former MLB star Steve Garvey defeated Rep. Adam Schiff in California’s U.S. Senate Republican primary, leading by over 4,800 votes with 85% of votes counted.
Garvey expressed gratitude for the support and said his message of unity, common sense and compassion resonated across California.
“As California’s votes are counted, it’s clear that our message of unity, common sense, and compassion resonates across the state,” Garvey said.

“I am deeply honored by the trust and support shown in these preliminary results.”
“I’m energized by our campaign’s momentum and ready for the challenge ahead,” Garvey said. “I look forward to a spirited campaign on the critical issues facing us.”
He will now face Schiff, one of the leading House Democrats, in November to replace the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
While Schiff remains favored due to his impeachment of Trump which appeals to the Democratic base, Garvey hopes his celebrity status can boost his chances in heavily Democratic California, where the last Republican Senate victory was in 1988.
Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 2:1 in the state, which is dominated by Democrats in statewide and federal races.
