Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is deploying over 250 law enforcement officers and sea and air assets to Florida’s southern waters in response to the crisis in Haiti, seeking to prevent a potential influx of Haitian migrants.
Violence from gangs has spiraled in Haiti, displacing tens of thousands, with 80% of the capital now under gang control.
The prime minister resigned and a transitional government is being formed as the US and others have withdrawn non-essential embassy staff.
While the US Coast Guard intercepted about 65 Haitians near the Bahamas this week, DeSantis said Florida cannot accept illegal immigration given it is over 1,100 km from Haiti.
State guardsmen and additional National Guard, law enforcement and wildlife agencies will support border security in the Florida Keys.
Florida has seen increased migrant arrivals by boat from Cuba and Haiti recently.
As a Republican and immigration critic, DeSantis also pledged troops for the US-Mexico border.
“No state has done more to supplement the (under-resourced) U.S. Coast Guard’s interdiction efforts; we cannot have illegal aliens coming to Florida,” DeSantis stated.
