An explosion occurred during a training exercise at an FBI facility in Irvine, California, injuring 16 sheriff’s department and SWAT officers.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team was conducting its annual training with the department’s bomb squad at the FBI-operated Jerry Crowe Regional Tactical Training Facility when the indoor blast happened before 1pm.
One officer sustained an injury requiring leg surgery but was not life-threatening, while others suffered leg or back wounds.
An additional 13 people reported dizziness and ringing in their ears, with most treated and released.
The cause of the explosion during the law enforcement training is under investigation, though the FBI said it merely provided the facility and was not involved in the incident itself.
“A training incident that occurred today at the FBI’s training facility in Irvine with law enforcement partners resulted in some injuries and is under investigation,” the FBI stated.
